New school initiative

His Eminence Bishop Dositej recently wrote to us with guidelines on improving and advancing the work of the Church School. His Eminence particularly emphasised the fact that current conditions opened up the possibility of extending the reach of the Church school across Britain and Ireland, using the latest teaching technologies to offer modernised tuition in Serbian language, religion, culture and history via programmes accredited in Serbia.

In line with Bishop Dositej’s concept of how things could and should develop, the new team at the Sunday school will make an official announcement shortly concerning the work of the school from September 2021. We therefore invite the parents of those children who have been going to Church school up to now, together with other parents who would like their own children to be taught by the new school team from September, to join us in discussion on this, by Zoom at 18:00 on Saturday 10th July 2021. During this meeting, we will clarify matters concerning the work of the School from September 2021.

Students from St Sava’s Sunday School visit Belgrade

From 21st to 26th October 2017, students from year 5 of the St Sava’s Sunday School, accompanied by two teachers, visited Belgrade, the capital of Serbia. This was the second educational excursion organised by the Church school.

The trip itinerary was synchronised with what children had learned in school – Serbian language and literature, religious education, national and cultural history of the Serbian people. The goal was for students to see the things they had learned about with their own eyes, as well as to get to know the religious and cultural-historical sights of the Serbian capital.

Church sunday school “Saint Sava”

ROOTED IN THE PAST, LOOKING TO THE FUTURE

PAST

More than 50 years ago the priests and parents at Saint Sava Church in London founded the Sunday School. Generations born in the UK grew up learning the Serbian language, history and Cyrillic alphabet, reading Serbian literature and adopting Orthodox catechism, customs, tradition, and folk dances of the Serbian people.

In May 1962, after receiving the Church Council’s permission and Very Rev. Miloje Nikolic’s blessing, Dragomir Nikolic and two other teachers established the school, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2012.

Literature evening – “From his last farewell to his return” dedicated to Miloš Crnjanski

On the 2nd of May 2015 a literature evening organised by the Saint Sava Sunday School was held in the Hall of Bishop Nikolaj in London. At the start of the event, the audience listened to Crnjanski's poem 'Lament over Belgrade' first told in the Kolarac after his return to the fatherland in 1965.

Students from the sixth grade made three sketches with anecdotes about the life of the writer and poet. They were able to illustrate the originality, wit and creativeness of Crnjanski.

Audiences then heard a famous song known as 'Strazilovo' which the poet had read out on a broadcast by Radio Belgrade over half a century ago.

Professor Milo Lompar, the president of the Miloš Crnjanski foundation and a regular lecturer at the University of Belgrade talked about the life of Miloš Crnjanski in the context of history, politics and literature of the last century. Professor Lompar has also written several books about Miloš Crnjanski.
