A “Round Table Initiative” identified that it is very important for individuals to identify themselves as “Serbian” in the census. Let all of us consider seriously how we respond and if we feel it appropriate declare ourselves as “Serbian”. The government uses the information on ethic groups to make sure they provide services and share funding fairly and try to understand and represent everyone equitably.
As Serbs within the wider community we have a very low profile and it has not been possible to use census data to help us determine how many people of Serbian heritage live in Britain or to take forward issues of importance to our community, as for instance the Jewish community does. This may be due to the fact that in previous years the census returns of Serbs have been varied with Serbs describing themselves as Serbian, Serb, Croatian, Yugoslav, Montenegrin, Bosnian, Macedonian etc. or because people are reluctant to draw attention to their heritage. This has not helped us to be more visible as an ethnic minority in this country.
