David Norris has published over 40 articles on Serbian literature and culture, and is the author of the following books: The Novels of Miloš Crnjanski, In the Wake of the Balkan Myth, Belgrade: A Literary and Cultural History. He is also the co-author, with Vladislava Ribnikar, of the language textbook Teach Yourself Serbian. He lectures in the Department of Russian and Slavonic Studies at the University of Nottingham where he is Associate Professor of South Slav Studies.
Church Choir St Sava was founded in 1952. In over 60 years of existence the choir, regardless of the constant change of singers and conductors, has consistently delivered its primary goal: participating in the Holy Liturgies and celebrating our Lord. Tonight, the inner circle of the St Sava church choir includes: Jelena Serovic, Ksenija Solaja, Bratislava Barac-Djukic, Zorka Maksimovic, Marko Gasic and Ilija Smiljanic.
Vesna Stanojevic is based in London where she works as a Senior Lecturer in Acting at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. In Serbia, she is a well know lead actor. Her recent roles include Bjanki in TV Series 'Cvat Lipe na Balkanu' and Princess Olivera Lazarevic in the film 'Put Ruzama Posut'. The Serbian audience know her as Silvija in the feature film 'Poslednji Krug u Monci', Ruza in 'Tri Karte za Holivud', Maca in 'Tamna je noc', Natasa in 'Absolutni Sluh', as well as from the numerous roles she played at The National Theatre, The Yugoslav Drama Theatre, The Belgrade Drama Theatre, Bitef Theatre, and others.
Maria Pavlovich Allport studied at Westminster University and majored in film production before completing drama training at The Drama Studio London. She has been involved with British film and TV productions, behind and in front of the camera, including a support character in 'The Bill', the drama 'Lady Audley's secret' and 'James Bond'. As a member of the children's Drama Group Radio and TV Belgrade she was in a popular series 'Bolji Zivot' (Better Life). Maria has been invited to read poetry and prose, on a regular basis, at book promotions including events at the Serbian Embassy in London, the Serbian Library, and has worked closely with Vesna Petkovic (Pro Art & Co) and pianist Maya Jordan. She is on the Management Committee of the Serbian Council of Great Britain
Vera Milankovic (composer, pianist and educationalist) born in London 1953, comes from a distinguished Serbian family of officials, scientists, university professors, diplomats and writers. As a composer and pianist, she is active in concerts, festivals, theatre and media (live performances, recordings and printed scores). Vera is a professor at the Faculty of Music University of Art, Belgrade (Serbia) and also a founder and director of the Pedagogical Forum, an international annual symposium for music and drama teachers, at all levels of education. She also delivers papers at ESCOM (European Society for Cognitive Sciences of Music), ICMPC (International Conference of Music Perception and Cognition), SRPMME (Society for Research in Perception of Music and Education), CIMO (Conference of Interdisciplinary Musicology), ISME (International Society for Music Education). She is a member of the Composers Association and Music Teachers' Association of Serbia, the editing board of the Vukova Zaduzbina, literary quarterly, Cultural and Educational Community of Belgrade and Rotary club Zemun.
Maya Momcilovic Jordan holds a Masters Degree from the Music Academy in Belgrade and a Post Graduate Certificate from the London College of Music. A winner of numerous prizes, she has performed throughout the former Yugoslavia, Italy, Cyprus, France, Germany and England and been recorded for various radio and TV programmes. Her recent performances include NIMUS Festival in Nis (Serbia), a concert at Serbian Cultural Centre in Paris as well as in Frankfurt (Germany). Maya's performing career has been characterised by her interest in bringing music and artists from different countries together. She was one of the co-founders of the project 'Sounds of the Balkans' and artistic director of numerous events, presenting artists and music from the Balkans and building bridges between cultures. She is also a founder, of 'Around the Globe Piano Music Festival', along with Marina Petrov, a new project running in London. As a committee member of The Serbian Council of Great Britain, Maya has been involved in numerous charity projects, helping Serbian people and children.
John Bailey MMus has worked professionally as a classical and jazz pianist for over 10 years and has a wide ranging experience as a musical director, accompanist, arranger and composer. Since moving to London in 2006 he has completed a postgraduate masters in jazz performance at Guildhall School of Music. He has been commissioned to write original music for classical trio, jazz/classical septet and jazz big band, including Imperial College's big band for which he has been musical director. He regularly performs with groups ranging from Swing to contemporary jazz and has performed and recorded with his own original music trio. His recent classical piano performance in November 2014 resulted in winning 'Around the Globe Piano Music Festival' (Adult Piano Recital) in London. John is also currently studying with Marina Petrov in preparation for the FRSM piano diploma.
Marina Petrov MA, as a child prodigy was a laureate of many national festivals and competitions for gifted children in the former Yugoslavia. This was followed by many tours, recitals and various media appearances including TV shows. She was awarded a national grant to study further at the famous Moscow Music Conservatoire, P.I.Tchaikovsky. Since moving to London, she continued to juggle her concert and teaching career with charity work and organising numerous arts events. Marina held various positions at ISSTIP development, writing several articles and giving seminars around Europe on related issues of Tensions in Performance. She is also a founder, of 'Around the Globe Piano Music Festival', along with Maya Jordan, a new project running in London, since November 2014. Her talents are renowned in the British press including The Times and she has contributed to International Who's Who in Music since 1992.
Silva Vuckovic McQueen studied singing at the Belgrade Music Academy with Aleksandra Ivanovic. She joined the Radio and Television of Serbia choir in Belgrade, where she appeared also as a soloist, and completed a year's course for opera singers at the National Theatre in Belgrade after which she was offered the role of Adele in the Fledermaus. At the same time she was awarded a full scholarship to Trinity College of Music, where she completed her postgraduate studies with distinction, studying with Wendy Eathorne, and was subsequently offered a scholarship to study at the Royal Academy of Music. She has toured throughout Europe with Die Münchener Operabühne, and with Trinity College of Music she sang Berlioz' Les Nuits d'Été and worked with Jorma Panula as the soloist in Sibelius' Kullervo Symphony. Silva is also a regular soloist with the Victorian and Edwardian group The Bold Balladiers, with whom she performs extensively throughout the UK. Other recent engagements have included solo soprano in Mozart's Requie Mass, Mozart's Coronation Mass, Villa Lobos's Bachianas Brasileiras No.5 and Haydn's Pauken Messe, as well as solo recitals at St. Pauls Church, St. James's Piccadilly, St Martin in the Fields, NIMUS Festival in Nis, Guarnerius in Belgrade and the Serbian Cultural Centre in Paris.
Harriet Mackenzie has toured Europe, America, China, South America, South Africa and Japan as a soloist and chamber musician. She has performed worldwide in venues such as the Wigmore Hall, Purcell Room, Concertgebouw and the Expo Dome, Japan. She premiered Robert Fokkens violin concerto, written and dedicated to her, at the South Bank Centre, London. She was also the dedicatee of Graham Coatman's violin concerto, premiered at the Swaledale Festival. Harriet has broadcast 'live' for BBC Radio 3, Classic FM and Hungarian National Radio. Harriet graduated from the Royal Academy of Music with First Class honours, MMus and DipRAM. As well as playing with Kosmos she performs with guitarist Morgan Szymanski, Sutherland Duo with Christina Lawrie and internationally acclaimed violin duo Retorica. Harriet has recorded on the Dutton and NMC labels to critical acclaim, including 'Gramophone Choice' for her recording of 'English Violin Duos' with Retorica. This Autumn Harriet will be performing the premiere of a violin concerto written for her by Deborah Pritchard, inspired by the paintings of Maggi Hambling which will be performed at LSO St Lukes and the National Gallery with the English Symphony Orchestra. For Meg Hamilton, Kosmos bridges the western and non-western music worlds, while providing opportunities for viola playing, daring creativity, group composing, cross-genre arranging and, in particular, freedom either to use or abandon rules and labels. In 2003, having gained an Honours degree in music at Edinburgh University and performance diploma at Trinity college of Music, she won a Millennium Award from the Jewish Music Institute which facilitated an intensive study of klezmer music. Thus began her on-going fascination with music from Eastern Europe, the Balkans, the Middle East and beyond. That same year she joined, and has since co-led, She'koyokh on violin, a group now hailed as the UK's best klezmer and Balkan band (Songlines magazine). She'koyokh has showcased Meg throughout the UK and Europe at stages such as Amsterdam's Concertgebouw, Aldeburgh's Snape proms, and WOMAD festival. Collaborations in London include concerts and recordings of Yiddish song with Hilda Bronstein, Jewish pop with Oi Va Voi, Greek and Turkish music with Cigdem Aslan's of Smyrna project, Arabic music with singers Abdul Salam Khier and Merit Ariane Stephanos, and Romanian folk and Gypsy music with Monooka's Caravan. With La Tipica Flamenco Company, she blends Gypsy with contemporary and the project has led to innovative flamenco collaborations with Kosmos. The SOAS Rembetiko band opened the doors to Greek, Armenian, Kurdish, Alevi and Persian traditional music. She sees her fiddle as her second passport. Her discoveries are easily transferable to her treasured viola and on to the ever evolving ingredients in the Kosmos cauldron.
Miloš Milivojević, Serbian born accordionist is a first prize winner at International Competitions in Germany, France, Italy and Denmark. In Serbia he studied with Vojin Vasovic and with Owen Murray at the Royal Academy of Music with full scholarship, where he graduated and was awarded with Dip RAM. In 2007 he became the first accordionist ever to win the RAM Club Prize at the Academy open to all instrumentalists and in the 2008 was the Winner of the prestigious Derek Butler London Prize at the Wigmore Hall. Milos has performed in venues such as the Royal Albert Hall, Wembley Arena, Birmingham Symphony Hall, Sidney Opera House, Wigmore Hall, Cadogan Hall, Purcell Room, St John Smith Square, St James Piccadilly, St Martin in the Fields and has performed at the Foundation Day, an award ceremony attended by HRH The Princess Royal. Internationally, he performed in Serbia, Montenegro, Russia, Slovenia, Hungary, Italy, Spain, Canary Iceland, Malta, Iceland, UK, Australia, and New Zealand. He regularly performs with violinists David Jurtiz and Harriet Mackenzie and guitarist Craig Ogden. In 2014 has been elected an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music (ARAM) in recognition of his contribution to music His debut solo CD will be released on Nimbus label in 2015. Zivorad Nikolic is a Serbian accordion player. In 2002 he was accepted by the National Conservatory of Music in Marseille, France and in his first year was invited to play at the Napoleon Palace. Zivorad went on to study with Owen Murray at the Royal Academy of Music in London. During this time he received the Sir John Barbirolli Foundation Award. Since 2007 Zivorad has been a member of Paprika, performing traditional music from Eastern Europe. He is also a member of the Fugata Quintet, Accordduo and She'koyokh Klezmer ensemble. He has performed solo as well as in chamber groups in some of the most prestigious venues including St. Martin in the Fields, St. John's Smith Square, Royal Festival Hall, Kings Place, Royal Albert Hall, New Morning (Paris), The Forum (Melbourne), Enmore Theatre and Brisbane Powerhouse and at festivals including Glastonbury, WOMAD, Cheltenham, Norfolk& Norwich, Deal, Canterbury, Cambridge, Auckland and Edinburgh Fringe. Zivorad has recorded on the albums of several artists including David Gomez, Aiden Love & Forty Thieves Orchestra and Marti Pellow. He has also featured on Channel 4's How Music Works and in a live performance for the BBC Radio 2 programme, Friday Night Is Music Night. Zivorad also played in some theatre productions in UK such as 'Fiddler on the Roof' at the Crucible theatre in Sheffield as well as 'Piaf' at the Curve theatre, Leicester.
