Classroom teaching

During the enrolment process for the new Sunday school year, several parents brought to our attention the fact that incorrect claims have been circulating in the community about the new school programme, the biggest of which is the claim that there will be no classroom teaching. This story is entirely false, and one wonders who invents these things! Just to make it absolutely clear: classroom teaching will take place in the (nicely re-decorated and refurbished) schoolrooms at St Sava's Church Sunday School, as it has done in the previous six decades. Classroom teaching is the foundation stone of our new school programme as it has always been with our children's education. Those who live too far from London will be able to access a separate, online programme. However, the classroom remains our core offering for parishioners. We sincerely hope you will take advantage of it, and if you have a child or children of school age, we look forward to seeing them in the schoolroom this month!

St Sava Sunday School Educational Board

Serbian Sunday school starts nationwide on 19th September 2021

Dear parishioners,

We are pleased to announce that starting this year our Serbian Orthodox Church of St. Sava Sunday school for children aged 5-12 will cover all of Britain and Ireland. Serbian language will be the main subject. You can enrol your children here in London by contacting This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or 020 7727 8367, or by coming to the London community centre (89 Lancaster Road, London, W11 1QQ) on the 5th or 12th September from 12 to 2pm.

Face-to-face classroom teaching will continue as before, on Sundays and possibly Saturdays according to demand. These weekend lessons will be complemented by a mid-week online refresher. Those children that cannot attend the school classrooms will have the option of purely online study. All pupils will additionally be able to access our interactive online platform whenever they wish (educational games, puzzles, etc).

Specially trained teachers are being employed to deliver the programme and parents will be encouraged to play a role and get involved in the life of the school, for example via a parents’ council . An Educational board led by the school Co-ordinator has also been formed to ensure high-quality teaching delivery and an enjoyable learning experience for your child.

The school will be using modern technologies and best practice pedagogic approaches and will foster new links between Serbian communities nationwide, for children and parents alike. It will also co-operate with other initiatives in this respect: for example with Azbukum Centre in Serbia, which has over recent years developed a programme for teaching Serbian as a second language all over the world. This programme has been formally accredited in Serbia, and is primarily aimed at Serbian diaspora communities such as ours. The course has been constructed so as to be accessible and interesting to children. It is also aligned with the Round Table of Serbian organisations’ Azbukum course for older children, aged 12-17. New school initiative announcement

The Serbian Orthodox Church Eparchate of Great Britain and Scandinavia is pleased to publicly announce that from September 2021 we will be organising teaching of Serbian language and religion across Great Britain and Ireland for children of five to twelve years of age. Our aim is to give all of our children the opportunity to learn the Serbian language and to become acquainted with the primary elements of Serbian religion, culture and history via an interesting and interactive programme of learning that makes use of the best current approaches to teaching and technology. Our Serbian-language teaching programme, accredited in Serbia, is specially designed for the needs of children who live abroad. It will be delivered by specially-trained teachers from Britain who are already experienced in working with children. We want our pupils to enjoy this process of learning the language of their parents and relatives, the history of their people and to also have the opportunity of making new friends as well. For those who can come to our classroom centres, the tuition will be hybrid (i.e. in the classroom at weekends with an online video refresher during the week). For those who are far from our centres, tuition will be purely online. Parents will be able to provide input and ideas for improvements via the Parent’s council which will also provide a channel for organising extra-curricular activities. With this Eparchial initiative we would also like to bring together our various Serbian communities in Britain and Ireland, and by co-operating with related initiatives (e.g Azbukum, Round Table) we want to offer the best possible educational experience to our pupils and their parents. So it is our pleasure to invite parents to enrol their children into the school. We also invite suitably qualified persons to contact us should they wish to teach Serbian language or assist in whatever way they can.

To enrol your child or to get more information about the new school initiative email us on This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or call our church office 020 7727 8367. We look forward to co-operating with you on this rewarding and significant task!
