Press release of the Holy Synod of Bishops

The Holy Synod of Bishops of the Serbian Orthodox Church, under the presidency of His Holiness Porfirije, Serbian Patriarch decided to start the regular session of the Holy Synod of Bishops of the Serbian Orthodox Church with the service of the Holy Hierarchal Liturgy in the Memorial Cathedral of Saint Sava in the Vracar district, on May 24, 2021, on the feast of Saints Cyril and Methodius. The Holy Liturgy will be served by Serbian Patriarch Porfirije with the concelebration of the hierarchs.

The previously planned solemn act of enthronement of the primate of the Serbian Orthodox Church in the Stauropegial Monastery of the Pec Patriarchate, the ancient seat of the Serbian Orthodox Church, has been postponed until further notice due to epidemiological measures in force in this southern Serbian province.

Bishop Teodosije on the endangerment of the Visoki Dečani Monastery and Serbian spiritual and cultural heritage in Kosovo and Metohija

Following the decision of the reputable European NGO for cultural heritage EUROPA NOSTRA from April 8th, 2021, to include the monastery Visoki Dečani, in addition to several other cultural and historical sites in Italy, Austria, Northern Macedonia, Croatia, and Greece, in this year’s list of the seven most endangered cultural monuments in Europe, for days now, we have been witnessing an organized campaign conducted by Kosovo institutions, Kosovo Albanian CSOs (some of which are known for their extreme nationalism) and part of the K/Albanian media.

This campaign aims to present EUROPA NOSTRA as an organization that was reportedly instrumentalized by the Government of the Republic of Serbia and the Serbian Orthodox Church (SOC), thus further endangering the holy sites of our Church in Kosovo and Metohija, especially the monastery of Visoki Dečani.

UK Census - Declare as Serbian to help our community to be recognised in the UK

UK Census - Declare as Serbian to help our community to be recognised in the UK and able to take forward issues of importance to Serbian community!

A “Round Table Initiative” identified that it is very important for individuals to identify themselves as “Serbian” in the census. Let all of us consider seriously how we respond and if we feel it appropriate declare ourselves as “Serbian”. The government uses the information on ethic groups to make sure they provide services and share funding fairly and try to understand and represent everyone equitably.

As Serbs within the wider community we have a very low profile and it has not been possible to use census data to help us determine how many people of Serbian heritage live in Britain or to take forward issues of importance to our community, as for instance the Jewish community does. This may be due to the fact that in previous years the census returns of Serbs have been varied with Serbs describing themselves as Serbian, Serb, Croatian, Yugoslav, Montenegrin, Bosnian, Macedonian etc. or because people are reluctant to draw attention to their heritage. This has not helped us to be more visible as an ethnic minority in this country.
